Interior Designing on a Budget

Remember when you opened a magazine and saw a beautifully designed bedroom, and you imagined your room also looking like that. Then you realise it is an advertisement for an interior designing company, and then you assume that there is no way your home will ever look like that. Firstly you do not have money to hire an interior designer and secondly your home is not that big. However, this is a misconception that interior designing can only be done by professionals and is quite expensive. Everyone can design their interiors, and that too on a low budget. Just make sure you keep these things in mind before revamping your home.

What’s Your Budget?

Before starting the work on anything, it is crucial to ensure that your budget is down to the t. Without any proper idea about the budget, you may spend more than you planned.

To make it a little more comprehensive, decide where you are willing to spend a little more money. Perhaps it could be on the cupboards that will cover many areas and hence need to stand out.

What Is Changing, and How?

If it is a new house, you need not think about this. Although when it comes to a place you are already residing in, not everything needs to be changed. You perhaps only want to change the look of your drawing room or maybe only the bookcase. Or it could also be only to change the setting of the sofa. Whatever it be, make a plan and note down how things should look afterward.

Another way to decide all this could be to take inspiration from already designed houses that you feel fit your aesthetic. The items used there do not matter; it is just for your reference. If you like something from there, you look for an alternative for it that would be within your budget. This way, you do not have to think of everything from the very start. This would be especially helpful if you are designing a new house.

What Is Your Aesthetic?

Like every human, every home also has a different personality. In this case, your, that is, the owner’s personality will form the aesthetic of your home. You can either choose to have one overarching theme over the whole house, or every person in the family can decide to revamp their corner of the home in their way. However, it is preferable to have one theme running throughout the house.

Choosing your aesthetic is essential because that will help you decide everything from the colours on the wall, accessories and furniture pieces and their colours, and how everything will be positioned.

The simpler the things are, the better. You need to remove all the unnecessary items you do not. These items could be either donated or thrifted, but thrifting will get you money that could be used to spend on designing your house. Moreover, if you keep your home with enough empty spaces, it looks classier and more expensive.

Utility over Style

When doing things on a budget, the most important thing is always to choose utility over fashion. Ensure that the things you will use most often are sturdy and long-lasting, even if it is a little expensive. If you prefer something just because it looks good but do not pay any attention to its warranty, you will spend more in the long run. However, it is also beneficial to keep in mind all these things while still in the planning stage.

On the other hand, you may spend less money on things like pillow covers or rugs as these can become boring after a point of time and can be changed frequently. So, in this case, style can be considered over utility. Another reason utility value should be considered first is that if the item does not fit your theme, likewise, you can always customize it. You can paint over a few of the things or something to make it fit your aesthetic.

Now let us look at a few ways in which you can design your home on a low budget.

  • Thrifting: You can save a lot of money by investing in pre-owned items. Vintage items are back in trend, and thrift stores are the best places to get them.
  • Plants: Plants are a great way to accessorise your home. And what’s more, it is also good for the environment, health and your pocket. If you are unsure how to take care of them, get low-maintenance plants like cacti which are easier to take care of.
  • Do it yourself: Paint your walls and furniture, make your showpieces and showcase your talent. This way, not only will your fantastic painting skills be out in the world, but it will also make your home look beautiful.
  • Books, Books, and more books: If you are a book lover, fill your walls with simple bookcases and fill them with your endless book collection. What better way to showcase the aesthetic of your home than by flaunting your love for books!
