Difference between Commercial and Residential Interior Designing

If an architect is responsible for constructing buildings, then an interior designer is the one who is responsible for fulfilling the purpose it was built for. They do this by designing the built space and making them feel either like a home or any commercial space they are meant to be. Interior designers play a massive role in creating a space that fits the place’s aesthetics. All this is impossible by one person, and hence, an entire team is involved. Further, when it comes to interior designing, there are two types under it, commercial and residential.

Residential Interior Designing

When a resident wants to get their house to feel more homely or wants their home to match their personality, a residential interior designer comes in to help them. These types of designers primarily incorporate different kinds of home décor ideas for your homes. The homes they decorate can range from single bedrooms to duplexes to a mansion.

The residential interior designers would take in the aesthetics their clients want and their expectations regarding how they want their residential place to look like. It all depends on the client what they wish the designer to do, from rearranging already owned furniture or giving them space and letting them design it entirely from scratch. They may also require them to redesign only a particular aspect of their homes, like the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, study room, or lounge room. They may even ask for minor changes in the house’s structure, like tearing down a wall or two, among other things.

Nowadays, some interior designers have started specializing their skills in only a part of interior designing. A single house project may have multiple designers, one for the kitchen, one for the bathroom, and another for the sitting area. An interior designer may choose a specialization based on their niche. However, interior designers still know all the aspects and may even help design the landscape around the house.

Commercial Interior Designing

Commercial spaces take many forms, and hence there are different types of interior designers specifically for that purpose. A commercial building could be an office space, mall, cafe, or even boutique. There are endless opportunities in designing retail spaces.

A commercial interior designer must keep various factors in mind while designing a particular space. They have to keep in mind the owner’s ideas and the consumer base the commercial place expects. For instance, in the case of a boutique store for women’s clothing, they will have to design keeping in mind the aesthetics that will attract women of a certain age and several other aspects. This can later impact how the business fares because the interior of a place has a substantial visual impact on the people, and this must be looked at.

There is much creative thinking involved when an interior designer designs a commercial space. They have to create it per the proper commercial and building laws, customize it according to the customer, etc. There can hardly be any two projects which are similar in the way they are designed.

In this case, some people find their niche, like someone who may design restaurants, whereas someone else will be a skilled mall designer. Since a lot of these projects, in this case, are on a larger scale, the work is equally challenging.

Difference

Both the design aspects are equally important in their respect, but there are some obvious distinctions between them. When we look at the creative part, commercial interior designing is more challenging and creatively stimulating. That is because there are not only different types of commercial spaces but also that each place can have different possibilities.

In the case of residential interior design, the designer only has to look at the client’s expectations, which would be a family space. Hence there is no external factor interfering with it. It will not be the world but would belong to a few family members. But in commercial interior designing, they have to think about the future customer base the place expects and the business owner’s vision about their venture.

Wrapping Up

The best commercial interior designers also have to keep in mind the ongoing trends, but the difficulty is that trends frequently change, making this job more complex. If the place is designed not with the trend, it may not see as much footfall as was otherwise expected. At the same time, the owner’s wishes can also not be ignored, and they have to find a balance between the two. Residential interior designs do not have to follow the trend as it is not about looking fashionable. Still, the idea is to make the place feel like a home customized for every customer. Hence be it either a residential or commercial interior designer, the best designers are capable of bringing to life the client’s vision for that space or place.
